VERNON - The long weekend is almost here, and so are a number of events for the whole family to enjoy.

For the fifth year, Vernon Winter Carnival is holding a Family Day event in Polson Park. Activities include games, face painting, and a bonfire with hot chocolate and s’mores on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For some educational family fun, head to the Okanagan Science Centre, which is open on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and hosts a special demonstration all about the brain from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Find more information and rates here.

There’s also a Vernon Vipers hockey game happening Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

You could also watch runners brave winter road conditions at the Starting Block 10 K race in Lavington Sunday at 10 a.m. Participants must register by 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

On Sunday, Kal Tire Place is the spot for family skating fun. Entry is a toonie per person, or $5 for the family, plus a tin of food for the Food Bank. The Vernon Vipers and Queen and Princess Silver Star will be there for the afternoon. Also expect face painting, bouncy castles and free coffee and hot chocolate from Tim Hortons.

Watch, or partake if you dare, in the Polar Bear Swim at Kal Beach at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. Entry is $10 per person, or $25 for a family of four. Proceeds go toward sustainable projects in Zimbabwe.

On Monday, Silver Star Mountain Resort is giving all B.C. residents 50 per cent off on skiing, snowboarding, cross country, tubing and skating for Family Day. More information can be found here.

You could also take the family for a free skate over the long weekend at the Centennial Outdoor Rink. Check times here. You might also want to keep the kids busy by making use of the free Family Day swim at the Vernon Rec Centre on Monday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Many stores will be closed for the stat holiday on Monday, but that doesn’t mean you and your family can’t enjoy a free mural walking tour downtown Vernon. Click here for a map of the tour.
