10 things to do in Kamloops and the Okanagan this weekend

Roots and Blues returns to Salmon Arm this weekend for the 27th year.

It's another packed weekend in the Okanagan and Kamloops. Check out some of what's happening around our region.


KAMLOOPS

Join in on an evening for the kitty cats.

Enjoy some food and fun Saturday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m. at The Stock Pot Café with proceeds to purchase supplies for SPCA kittens.

Featuring The Freudian Slips and Sweater Kittens, the 19+ dinner includes roasted chicken fettuccine alfredo marinara, Caesar salad, garlic bread and dessert. There will be a cash bar and doors open at 6:30 p.m. with dinner served at 7 with entertainment to follow.

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased here or at The Stock Pot Café.

New Country 103.1 along with the BC Wildlife Park, the Horse Barn, and the South Thompson Inn & Conference Centre are excited to present this year’s annual outdoor Birthday Bash Fundraiser on Sunday, August 18.

Don’t miss out on an afternoon filled with Canadian country music artists featuring the Hunter Brothers, Chris Buck Band, Petric, The Heels, Dave Hartney, Lindsay May and Bobby Garcia. Enjoy the Molson Canadian Beer Garden paired with a variety of local food trucks, walk through the Park to check out the animals, and don’t forget to purchase your 50 / 50 tickets. All proceeds of this fundraising event will go towards purchasing a portable digital x-ray machine for the BCWP and Fawcett Family Wildlife Health Centre. SALMON ARM

The Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival is back for the 27th year.

This packed three-day music extravaganza will keep you dancing, singing, eating and enjoying beverages, an artisans market, kid zone and various workshops.

Headliners include the Jim Cuddy Band, Sue Foley Band, Irish Mythen, Valdy, Birds of Chicago and more. There will be over 45 bands and performers with over 80 performances during the festival on six stages.

An international family fun zone includes a climbing wall, face painting, physical activities and tons of other fun. The festival boasts two beverage gardens and a wine garden, artisans’ market and plenty of food trucks.

VERNON

Once again the members of the adult staff of the Vernon Cadet Camp Museum will be holding an auction for the museum Saturday, August 17 at 7 p.m.

There will be plenty of wonderful items to auction off, with a goal of $10,000 to go toward museum operations for 2020.

There will not be a formal BBQ this year. However, there will be plenty of snacks and appies.

The museum will be open at our regular time on this day.

It’s a family fun kind of day Sunday, August 18 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. during Family Days at the Historic O’Keefe Ranch

Enjoy pony, tractor rides and stage coach rides. Enjoy the mansion tours, a scavenger hunt and friendly farm animals. Play lawn games, or learn how to rope a cow. Find out more here

KELOWNA

Sip and savor some of the fabulous small, artisan wine producers at the Garagiste North Wine Festival at Sterling Vineyards Sunday, August 18.

The festival brings together the small guys; wines produced from 100 per cent Canadian grapes and under 2000 cases total production annually.

Mamas for Mamas are hosting a back to school swap at the Kelowna Okanagan Boys and Girls Club Saturday, August 17 from 1 – 3 p.m. The club is located at 1434 Graham Street.

Bring your household or clothing donations to this event to be shared with other families in our community. If bringing donations please arrive during setup to lay out your donations on the appropriate tables between 12:30 and 1 p.m. Swapping begins at 1 and continues until wrap up time at 3.  You do not have to bring anything to donate in order to participate or take items. These events are no limits and you are able to take home as many items as you would like. The more that goes, the less that has to be packed up at the end. If you would like to volunteer to help at this event please email penny@mamasformamas.ca

We will also be collecting donations of non-expired food, formula, back to school items, diapers and wipes for those who can contribute. There will also be a door prize and free Starbucks treats.

There’s something for everyone in Joe Rich Sunday, August 18.

You and your family are invited to take part in the annual Joe Rich Fire Rescue Community Appreciation BBQ.

This fundraiser takes place from 12 - 3 p.m. this Sunday at the Joe Rich Fire-Community Hall, 11481 Highway 33.

Included is a BBQ (by donation), fire-fit course for kids, skills demonstrations, hose-bowling competitions, a photo booth with real fire gear and plenty of time to make new friends and meet your neighbourhood firefighters.

Come for the murder mystery and stay for the meal.

Ride the historic Kettle Valley Steam Railway with the Summerland Singers and Players as they bring you Murder on the Rails: The Case of the Mondello Crime Family, followed by a delicious meal at the train station.

The who done it mayhem leaves the station at 5 p.m., Saturday, August 17. Tickets are $59 and wine is by the glass, cash only. Check out the website for more info

Everyone is invited to the Four Seasons Cultural Society Pow Wow Between The Lakes, a celebration of the culture and traditions of the Syilx (Okanagan) people this weekend.

The three-day competition runs August 16-18 at the Outma Sqilx’w Cultural School on the Penticton Indian Band Reserve overlooking both Skaha Lake and Okanagan Lake. This event is drug and alcohol free.

Hundreds of competitors from across Western Canada and the United States will proudly wear their colourful regalia and display their talent and athleticism in a range of traditional dance and drumming events.

This is the third year for the event which brings thousands of visitors to the region to enjoy not only the Pow Wow but everything the Okanagan has to offer. Visit here for more details.
