WEST KELOWNA - Varina Stone welcomed a praying mantis into her home expecting it to hunt insects. She never anticipated witnessing her pet become the prey of a black widow spider in her own basement. "I saw her at the bottom of my sliding door. I was about to move her near the light to hunt when a black widow suddenly shot out and began anchoring her leg down," Stone recounted. The attack occurred as she was gathering bugs for her mantises. "It scared the heck out of me." Stone immediately backed away from the venomous spider and rushed for her camera. The intense six-minute struggle was captured in a video she posted to her YouTube channel on Sunday, Sept. 2.
