Event Description

Pleasant Street Cemetery celebrates its 125th anniversary Sunday, May 25, 2:00 to 3:00 pm. The Sagebrush Neighbourhood Association and many community organizations, the Royal Canadian Legion, schools, and the City are coming together to commemorate this historical cemetery and the people buried there.
Originally set well outside of town just seven years after Kamloops was incorporated, the Pleasant Street Cemetery is now in the centre of the Sagebrush Neighbourhood. This three-block park-like space holds a special place in Kamloops, physically, historically, and of course emotionally for those who have family resting there. Its history reflects much of the City’s and region’s settlement history. The impact of world events can be read on the gravestones, including epidemics and world wars.
The celebration on May 25th will begin with a ceremony by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 52, in remembrance of the many local men who died on behalf of Canada and are buried or commemorated at Pleasant Street. Poppies created by students from Lloyd George Elementary and Kamloops School of the Arts will be presented and later placed on the graves of veterans. The students have been learning about veterans and pioneers resting at the cemetery.
Including school children is also fitting because the second presentation is about the Beattie sisters, the influential teachers who had a great educational impact on many early Kamloopsians. The Kamloops Players, accompanied by the Old Time Fiddlers, will perform a short skit about Miss Emily Beattie, for whom Beattie School is named.
Also participating on the day will be the Kamloops Heritage Society, Kamloops Museum & Archives, the Kamloops Family History Society, and the City of Kamloops, which has put in some significant improvements this spring, particularly to the flower gardens in the eastern section.
Since the first person was interred in the cemetery—George Hirst on May 28, 1900—over 7,000 have been buried there. Several families have generously shared their stories, which are being posted on the Sagebrush Neighbourhood Association Facebook page (#pleasantstreetcemetery) and will be collected to view at the celebration.
