Event Description

**ON HOLD UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE** Artist Statement: Ava has always been drawn to nature. When she was younger, she had a strong desire to rescue wildlife -- insects, worms, spiders, butterflies, and small animals. Ava wanted to save anything that was out of its habitat, that she felt needed to be returned so that it may survive. She remembers once, when she was four years old, she found something on the beach. Ava gazed curiously at the limp creature that lay shriveled on the shore. The animal was a striking mixture of blues and purples that looked like an air-filled bubble on the sand. It was a Portugese Man o’War. Her parents had warned her not to touch them due to the long venomous tendrils that trailed from their bodies. Even so, she gently lifted the withering creature with her shovel, carried it to the edge of the water and then watched as it floated slowly back to sea. As Ava has grown older, her desire to rescue wildlife has evolved to include the environment and our planet as a whole. She believes it’s important to advocate for the planet due to its helplessness against human destruction and our continued impingement on natural spaces. In many of her pieces, Ava either uses environmentally friendly materials or she takes elements of waste and transforms them into something beautiful. The subjects represent elements of nature that are important to Ava, or a message that she would like to convey. Artist Bio: Ava Arends is a senior in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at Norkam Senior Secondary School. This exhibition is meant to showcase several pieces from her body of work over the course of the two year program. She is a mixed media artist and is continually experimenting with new materials and techniques. Ava takes a lot of inspiration from the environment around her and is influenced by the city she grew up in, Austin, Texas as well as Kamloops, BC where she currently resides. She has demonstrated her love for the environment through participation in wildlife management with the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program in the US, and through her involvement with Norkam’s Environmental Club and Invasive Species Council here in Kamloops, BC. ***************************************************************************** Start date: Thursday March 26, 2020 End date/Strike: Saturday April 18, 2020
