Event Description

Participants will learn the craft of portrait painting by applying classic methods. The course will include the basics in drawing skills, design, learning to discern values, chroma, and how to model form. The class will work on paint application and will discuss warm-cool colour balance and gaining clarity on the intended message. The controlled pallet method will be demonstrated. There will be lots of critique for those who are interested in learning how to paint representationally. Participants will paint from a live, costumed model. An additional, one-time model fee will be shared, depending on the class size. A material list will be sent out after registration. About the Instructor Barbara Ward is a seasoned oil painter who has painted for over 40 years. She has studied with many notable teachers such James Smyth and Randy Sexton in California, and Yuqi Wong in Santa Fe. Barbara also learned from Jack Faragasso at the New York Students Art League in New York City, where Barbara studied portrait painting for two years. She began teaching portrait painting in Vancouver in 1994. After 40 years, Barbara feels she is just getting warmed up to produce her best work – there is always more to learn! She looks forward to sharing her enthusiasm and knowledge with her students.
