Event Description

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social-well being. It affects our day to day lives in a variety of ways and can determine how we are able to handle difficult situations. Mental health is just as important as physical health and there has been a lack of understanding of what mental health really is. On January 30th, 2019 -- Bell Let's Talk Day -- Mind of Mine Foundation presents a free forum about various topics of mental health including stresses, anxiety, common trends and exercise, and coping. Along with some incredible speakers, there will be several resources setting up information booths including: Canadian Mental Health Association (Kelowna), Foundry, Bridge, Third Space Coffee, Empower Me, and Thrive. To end the stigma associated with mental health, first we must learn and educate ourselves on the topic. We encourage everyone to attend this event! A little bit about the speakers: Myfanwy Bakker and Diana Lisi: Myfanwy is a PhD student in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of British Columbia. Throughout her professional experience as a registered nurse, she has worked extensively in the areas of mental and sexual health. Her research interests include the role of self-compassion and mindfulness in mental health, emotion regulation, depression, and the impact of trauma and stress on formal and informal caregivers. She is passionate about reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues and advocating for increased access to mental health services in Canada. Diana is a PhD student in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. Her main research interests are in understanding the specific ways in which emerging adults use their social support networks to help manage their daily positive and negative emotions. In a clinician setting, she has worked with individuals experiencing anxiety, low mood, and health-related concerns, among others. She is passionate about working towards reducing stigma towards mental health and increasing the utilization of mental health services. Dr. Lesley Lutes: Dr. Lutes is an Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Training at the University of British Columbia. She is a registered Clinical Psychologist whose area of research is in developing innovative behavioral treatment interventions in lifestyle changes. Dr. Matthew Burnett: Dr. Burnett of the Kelowna Psychologists Group is a registered Clinical Psychologist and provides a range of assessment and treatment services that include: Anxiety (e.g. excessive worry, fear of avoidance, panic, phobias, social anxiety, perfectionism, etc), depression, anger, stress and adjustment, cognitive behavioral therapy, and diagnostic assessment. Dr. Burnett has been qualified as an expert in the Provincial Court of British Columbia. Dr. Keith Brewster: Dr. Brewster, Third Space Coffee, holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and focuses on weight management and bariatric surgery. His research includes how under eating affects one's health and neurological function, obesity, and weight management. Professor Manuela Reekie: Professor Reekie is a senior instructor in the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia. With experience as a pediatric nurse, she understands the importance of psychological wellbeing and physical health.
