Event Description
Join us on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 pmat the Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Regional Library (2800 30th Ave.) for a special presentation by Dr. Wendy Wickwire as part of the Hometown Histories Speaker Series. Presented by the Museum & Archives of Vernon and the Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Historical Society, and generously hosted by the Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Regional Library, this event will explore Dr. Wickwire’s research into Indigenous history and the work of James Teit.
Dr. Wickwire is an expert in Indigenous and oral history and Northwest anthropology, as well as an Emeritus Professor at the University of Victoria. She is the author of At the Bridge: James Teit and an Anthropology of Belonging and editor of Write It On Your Heart: The Epic World of an Okanagan Storyteller (with Elder Harry Robinson, a member of the Lower Similkameen Band). Her scholarship offers vital insights into the lived experiences, voices, and resistance of Indigenous peoples, and the significance of oral history in shaping understandings of the past.
As Gwyneth Evans, Archives Manager at the Museum & Archives of Vernon and Secretary/Treasurer of the Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Historical Society, shared:
“We are incredibly grateful to have Dr. Wendy Wickwire join us for this special presentation. Her research deepens our understanding of Indigenous history in this region and highlights the importance of oral traditions and community knowledge. We are honored to have her as part of our Hometown Histories Speaker Series. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to the Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Regional Library for so kindly agreeing to host us. This partnership helps us bring important history to our community, and we look forward to welcoming everyone.”
The organizers respectfully acknowledge that this event takes place on the Ancestral, Traditional, and Unceded Territory of the Syilx People. A special invitation and welcome is extended to Indigenous community members, on whose lands this presentation is taking place.
Admission for this event is free, and all are welcome. Seating is limited to 100 on a first-come, first-served basis. The presentation will be followed by a short Q&A session. Donations to support the Vernon Museum or the Vernon Branch of the Okanagan Historical Society are welcome and entirely optional—details on how to contribute will be included in the program available at the event.
Accessibility and Parking Information: The library parkade is open during library hours. Please note that the gate now closes between each car—attendees should roll up to the gate as close to the building as possible to trigger the sensor. There is an outside entrance on 28th Street with an accessible ramp and entry from the library’s main foyer.
