Event Description

Step right up for a week-long circus extravaganza! Green Fools Theatre Society is coming to Oliver to teach circus for ages 8 to 14. The camp is hosted by Venables Theatre and will allow youth to try a multitude of circus disciplines including stilts, unicycles, juggling, walking barrels, aerial skills and more!
For Green Fools Co-Founder Dean Bareham, circus and performing had a profound impact on him. “It really saved my life,” says Bareham, “I was a teen who could have easily slipped through the cracks, and it gave me direction.” During the camp the kids get to try everything from juggling to stilt walking. “We want to create a place where kids can participate in healthy risk taking and see that failure is okay,” says Bareham. At the end of the week, participants will create a performance for their families.
In Bareham’s thirty years of experience teaching circus, he has experienced the incredible impact it has on kids. “During one of our camps in Calgary we had a young boy join us who had just arrived in Canada from Ethiopia. He was a refugee and didn’t speak English. Within days he was performing in the Jubilee auditorium and the rest of the kids had banded together to make sure he felt included.”
