The District of Summerland council has allowed for a 45-unit subdivision to be built along the shore of Okanagan Lake in Trout Creek.

During its regular meeting on Nov. 8, council approved a development permit for 3240 Landry Crescent to allow for the construction of single detached dwellings and duplexes. Mayor Toni Boot and councillor Erin Carlson voted against the motion.

In an email, Mayor Boot said public access to Okanagan Lake and the existing Gartrell Trail will not be affected.

“A sensitive ecological area, referred to locally as The Sanctuary will be continue to be off-bounds,” she wrote.

The project will consist of 27 buildings. There will be a total of 102 parking stalls and driveways will be private and shared.

Council received letters from four locals who either objected to the projects or shared concerns.

Worries expressed by residents include the protection of the nearby riparian area, the low-lying properties could be susceptible to flooding, the units being used for short-term rentals, and one resident sees the project more as resort than residential units.
