A Kelowna craft brewery apparently makes the best gluten-free beer in Canada since it has won gold, silver and bronze medals at a national competition.

Grey Fox Brewing took home all three awards in the gluten-free category at the Canada Beer Cup, according to a media release from the brewery issued today, Nov. 9.

Grey Fox’s Quick Witted took first place, Humble Lager was second, and Buckwild Stout won the bronze.

“I’m celiac and can’t drink traditional beer without getting very sick,” Grey Fox’s owner and brewmaster Chris Neufeld said in the release.

Canada Beer Cup pitts breweries against each other, giving out awards for 67 different beer styles in 11 categories.

To make the beer gluten-free, Neufeld used rice and quinoa instead of wheat. He said people with gluten intolerances deserve delicious beer too.

“I wanted to make beers that have all the flavour of those made with barley and wheat, but using ingredients that won’t make people like me ill. It’s rewarding to know that Grey Fox beers are not only safe for people who can’t have gluten, but also tasty enough to stand up against the best brews in Canada,” he said.

Grey Fox’s Quick Witted won another gold medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards earlier this year.
