Penticton's Tin Whistle Brewing won two gold medals at the Canada Beer Cup earlier this week.

Tin Whistle’s Glorious Hazelnut Coffee Milk Stout won first place in the cream/milk stout category and its Mythical Creatures Westcoast IPA won the IPA of 6% or lower category, according to a media release from the brewery.

The Canada Beer Cup is a national contest between independent breweries across the country. A panel of Canadian and international beer experts presented awards for 66 beer styles, across 11 categories. The awards were handed out at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre on Oct. 25.

Tin Whistle opened in 1995, but was purchased by Alexis Esseltine and Timothy Scoon in 2020. The couple lost their jobs due to the pandemic and decided to try their hand at craft beer.

“When we took over Tin Whistle we had not much more than a Frank Appleton designed brewhouse, one brewer and a dream,” Alexis said in the release.

Since the couple took over the brewery it has also won the Canadian Brewers Choice Award for Branding of the Year in 2022 and a BC Beer Award Gold Medal.

“From the beginning Tim and Alexis have believed in what the brewery could do,” Tin Whistle’s head brewer Matthew Farmer said. “Together we have brought in the systems and equipment needed to be successful. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of Tin Whistle’s evolution, and to brew award-winning beer in this brewery I’ve called home for over 15 years.”
