520 ha wildfire causing partial closure of Trans-Canada near Hope
A large wildfire burning close to the Trans-Canada Highway is still causing partial closure today.
DriveB.C. is reporting Highway 1 is closed in the eastbound lanes this morning, Sept. 12, between Chilliwack and Hope. All eastbound traffic is being detoured from Highway 9 to Highway 7, or Highway 11 to Highway 7.
The Flood Falls Trail wildfire is currently mapped at 520 ha in size and is burning out of control next to the highway, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service's latest update. It was originally discovered Sept. 8 and is suspected to be human caused. Yesterday, it was mapped at 485 ha.

"Due to hot, dry conditions, increased fire behavior will be visible today. This fire is burning is very steep terrain presenting access challenges for ground crews. Helicopters are focusing on bucketing the east and west flanks of this fire," according to the wildfire service.
On the fire's northern flank, structure protection crews are working near Highway 1 using a water delivery system. Crews are focusing their efforts on protecting the Trans Mountain Pipeline, Highway 1, homes and structures within Hope and the Hunter Creek Hydro Project. They are also working along the Hunter Creek rest stop, according to the wildfire service.
Nearby communities are expected to see increased smoke today.

Evacuation orders and alerts are in effect for the District of Hope and Fraser Valley Regional District.
