Out of control wildfire near Hope impacting traffic on Trans-Canada
Drivers are being asked not to stop on Highway 1 in the Hope area due to a wildfire burning out of control.
The Flood Falls Trail wildfire, estimated at 485 hectares, is burning close to the Trans-Canada between exit 160 at Hunter Creek Road and exit 170 for 10.3 kilometres, according to Drive B.C. today, Sept. 11. As well, there is a full eastbound lane closure for two kilometres from Hope to Chilliwack. Eastbound traffic is being detoured via Highways 9 and 7.
The fire is highly visible from the community of Hope and Highway 1, and increased smoke and visibility issues will be apparent this weekend, B.C. Wildfire Service said. Drivers are asked to slow down, be alert and respect all posted signage along the route as crews will be working in the area.
An evacuation alert is in effect for some residents in the area.
There's currently no threat to critical infrastructure or homes, and pipeline construction infrastructure in the area has not been impacted. The fire was reported late evening, Sept. 8, and is suspected to be human caused.
The wildfire service has liaised with the Hope Fire Department, Fraser Valley Regional District, the District of Hope and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to prepare for the possibility of the Flood Falls Trail Wildfire impacting Highway 1, and local communities.

Due to several wildfires burning throughout the province, along with Washington state and Oregon, special air quality statements have been issued today by Environment Canada.
"Local fire activity will continue to cause hazy conditions, and smoke conditions may worsen if fire activity increases later today," the weather statement reads. "There are ongoing smoke impacts in areas near Hudson’s Hope and Fort St. John due to the Battleship Mountain wildfire.
"Areas in southwestern B.C., including the southern Fraser Canyon and Similkameen regions, may experience worsening air quality due active local fires and outflow conditions. Areas of southern Vancouver Island may be impacted by smoke from fires within B.C. and Washington state."
