iNwine's Farmer Friday: Covert Farms does it all

The Covert family
The Covert family

OLIVER - Covert Farms in Oliver has it all and does it all. They are farmers and winemakers and are totally organic. Now on the fourth generation of farmers in the family, Gene and Shelly Covert with their three children and  Gene's mother, Diana Covert, run this stunning 650-acre organic farm with all hands-on deck.

Visitors to Covert Farms can choose to shop for produce at their store on-site or pick their own vegetables from the u-pick gardens. While there you can also feed the longhorn cows, marvel at the staggering backdrop of McIntyre Bluff (a famous Okanagan landmark) hike, or hop on the back of an old pick up truck for a tour of it all. And, you can taste their award-winning organic wines.

Covert Farms is also a winery that prides itself on creating wines that are made by hand, from vineyard to bottle. The grapes are sourced from their own organic, biodynamic vineyards that are meticulously tended working closely with nature and their unique ecosystems. Winemaker Gene Covert explains, “It is only from complex and biodiverse ecosystems that real, true flavours can be achieved.”

The Covert’s organically-grown wine portfolio includes Roussanne/Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon, Rosé, as well as their proprietary red blends, The Bluff, MDC and the iconic, Amicitia.

This beautiful place has a beautiful family legacy attached to it. Gene’s grandfather George Covert arrived in Canada with his wife Winifred in 1959 and proceeded to purchase this would be farmland. The entire family history timeline is on their website and is really inspiring.

The website also has a fabulous in season chart listing what is ready to pick on the farm. For example, right now you can pick up strawberries, zucchini and pattypan squash, blueberries, cherries, apricots and herbs with more on the way as July progresses. P.S. they are famously known for their crazy good corn.
