Today's Wine Wednesday takes us to Summerland to meet the Manoff family, see Silkscarf Winery and to enjoy its unique and delicious Viognier

Silkscarf Winery offers an intimate, authentic experience. Family-run in beautiful Summerland, the Manoff family could not be more charming. The winery is their passion project, and that is obvious once you spend time talking to Roie Manoff, who can usually be found pouring at the tasting bar. You will feel at home here, because it is their home and they graciously invite you in and embrace you with hospitality. During the summer months, you can sit and enjoy a glass or bottle of wine on the patio and the spectacular lake view.

The Manoff’s are originally from Israel. There, Roie spent 26 years in the Israeli Air Force as an Israeli fighter jet pilot. The winery name Silkscarf is a tribute to the first Israeli pilots that used to fly in open-air cockpits with their colourful silk scarves flying in the wind. He and his wife bought the vineyard in 2004 after they fell in love with the property while visiting Canada.

Winemaking here is a family group effort here, with every member of the family weighing in on the process. Son, Idan and his partner Ateret are most involved, fielding both vineyard and cellar, and both dedicated to crafting the award-winning wines that they are known for, including this beautiful Viognier on their over 10-acre estate.

What is Viognier (vee-ON-yay!)?
This beauty of a white wine grape is super aromatic and usually used in red wine blends, blended with a red wine grape. Originating in France’s Northern Rhône appellation of Condrieu, where it used to be quite exclusive, over the years the grape has grown in popularity and plantings can be found all over the world. And in B.C. at a select few wineries.

2018 Silkscarf Viognier $22.52

Pale lemon in colour, it exhibits a fresh and fragrant nose of apricot, white peach, grapefruit, granny smith and crushed rocks. The palate is dry, showing a typical creaminess that is nicely balanced by bright acidity and flavours of apricot, grapefruit and light pineapple. A wine with great structure and a long finish.

This is a glorious summer wine that pairs beautifully with food.
