Farmer Friday: Rupi & Sunny Bhangu, K.L.O. Farm Market
Rupi and her husband Sunny Bhangu have owned the busy K.L.O Farm Market in Kelowna for eight years but have been leasing it out until this year. Rupi says, “Farming is in her blood. Her family in India are farmers and running her own gardens and market has been her dream.”
Rupi is the friendly face that will greet you in the in the market with her adorable two daughters Prabhnoor and Jasleen playing nearby. They have given the market a wonderful facelift and diversified their offerings since taking over operations. All of the vegetables come from the Bhangu’s own gardens as well as some of the fruit from their orchards off site. The other fruit is sourced from other farms “to help support the other farmers”, Rupi says with her warm smile. Besides a wonderful array of local fruit and vegetables, they carry other stapes like eggs and lemons and limes etc. They also have a wide offering of local condiments, artisanal products and juices that Rupi says will be great to make locally focussed gift baskets especially closer to Christmas (the market closes for the year end of October).
New this year too is the Kitchen Party Amazing Grilled Cheese Food truck parked out front making, amongst other things, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. A great location to park and have a snack or lunch break before shopping. They cater as well.
One of my favorite offerings at this easy access family market is the u-pick zinnia garden! For $5 you can pick your own bouquet of these colourful beauties or purchase a beautiful one already made lovingly by Prabhnoor and Jasleen.
The beautiful Lapin cherries currently in stock are probably the last of the season due to the heavy rains so go pick up your final binge. Corn is coming soon!
Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @klofarmmarket for updates on what is in season!
