The average price of gasoline in Canada was down $1.61.1 yesterday, Sept. 1 and falling.

But in Kamloops and Kelowna, it is staying at the $1.77.9 range it has been at for weeks.

Vernon is about five cents cheaper and Penticton about six cents more.

The one bright spot is Costco in Kelowna that is showing, on GasBuddy.com, regular gas at $1.69.9. That’s still well above the national average but a move in the right direction.

On the national front, the drop brings gasoline to about the rate it was selling for prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 25.

“Prices have been declining steadily since August, in part due to the falling price of crude oil and also because of lower U.S. refining margins,” states a Canadian Press news article published today.

The high price of gasoline has also forced drivers to cut back on travel this summer so demand has gone down.

At this time last year, gas was selling in the $1.50 range in the Thompson-Okanagan before climbing to the $1.75 range by the time the war broke out.

Of course, any drop in gas prices now is relative.

In early 2020, drivers were treated to gas selling for $1 per litre or less in the Thompson Okanagan.

Gas in Toronto is selling for about $1.60 a litre today but it’s around the $1.86 mark in Vancouver. In Calgary, a litre of gas is $1.39.9 in some stations.
