iN VIDEO: Mountain goat, kids wander past stopped traffic near Summerland
A mother mountain goat with two kids in tow ambled down a rocky spur road on the side of an alternating traffic stop on Highway 97 north of Summerland last week and a driver got a video of the special scene.
The mother stops and looks up at the drivers for a bit while the babies huddle close to her, then the group proceeds to walk casually along the roadside in their thick, woolly coats.
Mountain goats are only found in the mountain ranges of western Canada and the northwestern United States. Known for their ability to navigate sheer cliffs, it’s common to see them when driving through Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks.
The goats typically live in steep, mountainous terrain but sometimes will descend to highways to feed on vegetation or lick salt off the road surfaces, according to Parks Canada.
