One in custody after heavy Kamloops police response

Police surrounded a downtown townhouse in Kamloops and took one man into custody on April 8, 2024.

A heavy police response at a home in downtown Kamloops on Monday was prompted by a mental health crisis.

The Kamloops RCMP mental health crisis unit, multiple officers armed with rifles wearing green uniforms and several other patrol officers were seen at a townhouse at 423 1 Avenue at around noon, April 8.

An officer at the scene and a witness said a mental health call that prompted the police response.

A man was taken into custody and police later said he was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital.

Kamloops RCMP detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn did not immediately respond to questions from iNFOnews.ca.

In a media release issued later in the afternoon, police said a stun gun was used to take the suspect into custody in what was described as a high-risk incident. Police did not say why the incident was considered high-risk.
