The number of new COVID-19 cases recorded in B.C. can vary by the hundreds from one day to the next.

In the last 24 hours, there were 759 new cases recorded in B.C., according to a news release issued by the Health Ministry today, Sept. 22. That means hundreds of contact tracers are busy tracking where those people have been and who needs to be warned to get tested, monitor themselves for symptoms or self-isolate.

That’s more than 200 cases higher than yesterday but slightly lower than last Friday.

It’s a similar case in the Interior Health region where a relatively high number of new cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, 233. That’s one of the highest daily case counts since Aug. 10 and well above the 147 recorded yesterday.

Similarly, the number of deaths fluctuates widely.

There were 10 more deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, all in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island. That compares to only one death the day before and brings the provincial death toll to 1,910.

Of the new cases, the Interior Health region had the highest tally of the province’s five health regions, followed by Fraser Health with 214, Northern Health with 129, Vancouver Coastal with 101 and 79 new cases on Vancouver Island.

That has put 324 people in B.C. hospitals, with 157 of those in intensive care. There are 5,458 active cases of COVID in B.C. with 1,223 in Interior Health.

The vaccination rate crept up slightly to 87.1% today, from 87% yesterday, for those 12 years and older who have received one does. There are 79.7% of B.C. residents who have received two doses. Some severely medically compromised people are now being booked for a third dose.
