Man with butane torch arrested in Vernon for starting fire

A 35-year-old Vernon man was arrested last week for starting a fire in the city with a butane torch.

A officer in plain clothes spotted flames near a building at around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in the 2600 block of Highway 6 and a person walking away from the area, according to an RCMP media release.

The officer put out the fire and called for backup.

RCMP said officers found a man a short distance away “crouched over as he attempted to start another fire with a butane torch.”

The man was recognized as someone with court conditions not to have any incendiary devices.

The 35-year-old Vernon man was arrested and charged with failing to comply with a probation order.
