A Kamloops man is suing two doctors, a pharmacist, Interior Health and Royal Inland Hospital because he says his common-law wife died after being prescribed the wrong dose of medicine.
Christopher Mayhew said his partner Deolinda (Linda) Godau was just 55 years old when she died of a fatal prescription of the drug Apo-Azathioprine.
He said his wife complained of a number of heart and stomach ailments in February 2022. She was hospitalized for eight days before being discharged with prescription medicines. The treatment did not go well and she saw her doctors again and got a different prescription.
The first indication of an error became apparent at the pharmacy on April 7, 2022, he said.
“(The) pharmacist… questioned whether the prescription… was correct, and attempted to contact (the doctor); however, she was unavailable,” Mayhew claims.
Without contacting the doctor, the pharmacist went ahead and filled the prescription the following day and Godau quickly became confused and weak, and was admitted to hospital again but continued to deteriorate in brain function.
Two days later, her doctor saw her at hospital and realized she benn provided the wrong prescription, Mayhew claims.
“Despite being treated with maximal medical management, Linda’s condition continued to deteriorate with multi-organ failure,” he claims.
She died April 14, 2022.
“As a result of the negligence of the defendants, Linda suffered a medical overdose resulting in her death,” he claims.
He is suing under multiple heads of damages including general and special damages.
The case was only filed this week and none of the defendants have statements of defence. The claims have not been tested in court.
