Kamloops city hall signs slapped with anti-mayor stickers

Kamloops Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson reported the sticker vandalism to RCMP.

"Wow our mayor sucks."

That's the phrase on stickers attached to signage at city hall today, with multiple on the one marking the mayor's parking spot.

It's not clear who made them or who's putting them on signs near city hall, but they got Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson's attention.

He said it's not the first time the stickers showed up at his parking space. Following the most recent sticker campaign, however, he reported it to Kamloops RCMP for vandalism.

Hamer-Jackson will be looking to have city staff search through weekend surveillance footage for the culprit, adding that Chief Administrative Officer David Trawin didn't want staff time dedicated to finding the sticker vandal last time.

The "Wow our mayor sucks" stickers have been placed on signs and light poles for months, but their creator isn't known. In addition to the one at the mayor's parking spot, there's another on a separate parking lot sign and a nearby crosswalk sign.

Hamer-Jackson has been a polarizing mayor for the entirety of his tenure, basing much of his campaign on tackling social issues and public safety. He was known before the election for his suggestion that people who are homeless and struggling with mental illness or addictions be given a space in a more rural area of the city, which he's pitched as a voluntary "wellness ranch."

He's been divisive within city hall, further isolating himself from the rest of council and City administration last week after he suspended acting Chief Administrative Officer Byron McCorkell.

Hamer-Jackson cited multiple reasons for the suspension. Among them he said it was because he didn't see enough progress on social issues and crime in Kamloops and because McCorkell stepped in to block the mayor's planned slideshow during his state of the city speech in March.

McCorkell was promptly reinstated by the other eight councillors, who announced their support for McCorkell in a news release a day before the vote in a closed meeting. Hamer-Jackson, meanwhile, didn't attend the last-minute meeting, while the suspension was called a "surprise" in the city council news release.
