A Storm of Giving Back

Barry Dewar doesn’t own and manage a hockey team solely for the love of the game; he’s invested because it’s his mission to mentor young players and teach them the importance of giving back.

Known for its youthful roster, the Kamloops Storm Junior B Hockey Club is a team that doesn’t just go hard on the ice, its focused, driven 16 to 19-year old players also reach out to the community.

“The thing about hockey is it often involves upper middle-class families, so it’s important to do things in life that involves others,” said Dewar. “The concept is that the Storm gives back to the community.”

Their most recent undertaking is a little different, however, as it’s focused on animals. The boys will have some fun on and off the ice with some furry critters; with the intent of supporting the Kamloops SPCA.

The Oct.  22, 5 p.m.  home game at Memorial Arena against the Sicamous Eagles will see 50 per cent of ticket sales go to the SPCA.

“Through the fires this summer, the SPCA was really taxed with cash flow, so we want to help them recover,” said Dewar.

The non-profit agency is also wanting to build a new facility. In an effort to further help with these initiatives, the Storm will also hold a silent auction during the Oct. 22 game and provide some fun with an extra special event during intermission.

“We are going to have a race on ice with 20 or so dachshunds,” explained Dewar, who says attendees at the game can buy a ticket to put in a draw for their favored dog. A winner will be drawn from each, and the person, and the dog, will win prizes; including Earls gift certificates, and pet food from Petland and Bosley’s. With Roving K9 Kare as the title sponsor, Dewar says more prize donations are always welcomed for the event, which promises to deliver plenty of laughs.

The Storm, which has been in Kamloops for 12 years after representing Osoyoos for five years, has also been involved with the Raise a Reader initiative as well as several other charitable efforts.

Dewar says his team is pumped and ready for the season, with three returning players and a roster of rookies who are up for the challenge and competition.

“Our goal is to not have an older team, but to develop our players and move them on,” explained Dewar. “One of the things we are really strong at this year is our goaltending; but we’re also competitive and strong and we have a lot of speed,” said Dewar, a father of three grown sons who have all played the game.

The Storm, a proud member of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, is ready to face the season and create a, fun fan atmosphere with improved concession, new heated seating, exciting intermissions and community outreach.
