The month of September is bustling with activity in the Okanagan Valley. Friends and family groups are still gathering for micro-vacations made possible by the cooler temperatures, new wines, and so many fruit, vegetable and root crops harvested by local growers. Farmgate sales and agri-tours are booming since the B.C. health authority lifted restrictions on gatherings. Wine trails highlight the grapes hanging off the vines this fall, as the Okanagan’s viticulture industry has another banner year.

Don’t miss an opportunity this month to visit Penticton’s locally famous farmers' market or Kelowna’s fall wine festival at the end of the month. After the last two pandemic years, we’re getting social. As we head into flu season, it’s “to hug, or not to hug”— that’s a big question.

When you and your group are out-and-about, wash your hands frequently and use sanitizer when it is offered, especially before eating a meal. Wear a mask indoors if you feel more comfortable, and keep an eye out for the new booster vaccination this fall. Check the provincial website for updates regarding new recommendations on how to stay healthy through flu season. These are just a few tips that can boost our enjoyment as we ease into resocialization and join in the festivities.

Did you know? A healthy immune system may help your body ward off illnesses when you become exposed. Vaccines are the single best way to strengthen your immune system. Next comes good nutrition and hydration - great ways to keep your immune system strong and fighting.

Although it may seem surprising to some, oral health can help strengthen your immune system to protect against common viruses. When a person does not take care of their teeth, the mouth can become overwhelmed by bacteria that can eventually cause gum disease (periodontal disease) and excrete acid to cause tooth infections putting stress on the immune system overall. In a nutshell – proper oral care is part of keeping the immune system healthy.

We can all keep up on our dental health by brushing after meals, flossing daily, and making regular appointments with a dentist. Ask your dental hygienist about preventive oral care and the ways to reduce any problems you may be having with your teeth and gums. Together, you can plan a customized daily oral care routine to keep your smile bright and healthy.
