Civilian investigation begins after man hurt in police shooting in Yahk, B.C.

YAHK, B.C. - A police shooting in southeastern B.C., has injured one man and resulted in another case for the province's newly launched Independent Investigations Office.

An RCMP release says a member from the Cranbrook detachment fired his service pistol late Tuesday night as he tried to stop a suspected stolen vehicle believed to have been involved in a car jacking earlier in the day.

A man and woman in the car were taken into custody.

Mounties say the man is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, while the woman and the officer were not hurt.

The shooting occurred in Yahk, about 64 kilometres southwest of Cranbrook, while the car jacking that prompted the incident happened in the Creston area, west of Yahk.

B.C. officially opened the Independent Investigations Office last month to provide civilian oversight into police-related incidents involving death or serious harm.
