Environment Canada is already warning about the nasty weather expected on highways through mountain passes in the Southern Interior today, and now the Ministry of Transportation has added its own alert.

Drive B.C. has issued a travel advisory today, March 22, for the Okanagan Connector from Kelowna to Merritt and the Coquihalla Highway from Kamloops to Merritt to go along with a special weather advisory from Environment Canada.

If you are planning to drive those highways, be ready for heavy rain that has the potential to change to heavy snow this afternoon and evening, the advisory says.

Highway 3 from Princeton to Hope via the Allison Pass, and from Kootenay Pass to Paulson Summit are also covered by Environment Canada's special weather advisory.

Environment Canada has said a frontal wave of warm air is moving across southern B.C. today, but it will be followed by a potent cold front that will suddenly drop the temperature and “result in a sudden change from rain to heavy snow over the highways.”

Authorities are asking travellers to exercise caution and be aware of rapidly changing road conditions. Drive B.C. goes so far as to ask people to consider alternate travel plans.

For the latest on the special weather statement go to the Environment Canada website here.

The latest road conditions can by found at the Drive B.C. website here.
