Winter weather finally on its way out of Southern Interior

Winter's last gasp: It was cold enough last night, March 12, 2019, to completely freeze Skaha Lake south of Penticton for the first time this year. But Thompson-Okanagan residents shouldn't have to be looking at snow and ice much longer as the extended forecast calls for above normal temperatures next week.

After a seemingly endless supply of winter-like weather in Kamloops and the Okanagan over the last few weeks, it appears the day many of us have been waiting for has finally arrived.

Following some snow yesterday and frosty temperatures overnight, Environment Canada is calling for sunshine and a high of around 7 Celsius in the Thompson-Okanagan today, March 13, with the extended forecast promising well above normal highs into next week.

Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says next week's highs could come close to setting records, particularly on Tuesday, March 19, when temperatures are forecast to reach 19 C in Kamloops and 16 C in the Okanagan.

Sekhon says a shift in weather patterns has seen a high pressure ridge slide into the province, which will bring warmer temperatures with it this week and next week.

Kamloops could see a flurry or two tomorrow morning, with a mainly cloudy day in store for the Okanagan, but daytime high temperatures are expected to reach 9 C in Kamloops and 7 C in the Okanagan.

By Friday and into the weekend, the forecast calls for sunshine and high temperatures in the double digits. Even the overnight lows are not expected to drop below 0 C by the weekend.

Sekhon says the extended forecast calls for a return to seasonally normal temperatures for the remainder of March, with highs around 11 C and lows of about -1 C.
