A wildfire burning to the south of Ashcroft has reached 780 hectares and is still classified as out of control.

Hot and dry conditions in combination with strong winds continue to influence fire activity on site today at the Tremont Creek, roughly eight and a half kilometres southeast of Ashcroft, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service’s latest update, July 15.

Winds accounted for an increase in fire behaviour yesterday and heavy equipment was pulled back to safety.

Today “heavy equipment will continue to establish egress routes and control lines. Once control lines are in place crews will be deployed to secure the control lines,” according to the service.

Structure protection teams are also on site, according to the service.

The Ashcroft Indian Band and the Village of Ashcroft have issued evacuation alerts while an evacuation order for 50 properties in Electoral Area "I" Blue Sky Country near Barnes Lake is in effect.

The regional district has also issued an evacuation alert for 675 properties in Electoral Area "I" Blue Sky Country and Electoral Area "J" Copper Desert Country. For more information on evacuation alerts and orders, visit the regional district's website.

Structure protection teams are also on site again today.
