Wildfire in Lake Country first of the season for Vernon Forestry

Firefighters were called out to a grassfire in Lake Country March 17.

LAKE COUNTRY - A grass fire in Lake Country that began as a controlled slash pile burn is under control with help from Ellison and Lake Country fire departments and the B.C. Forestry Service.

The fire at 14783 Barkley Road was reported around 1:40 p.m. By 2:30 it had grown to a 1.1 hectare, rank two fire with open flame. Firefighters were challenged by the steep slope, shifting winds and dry fuel, Vernon fire zone Initial Attack Crew Leader James Sawchuk says, adding the fire was moving up the slope. This wildfire is Forestry's first of the season for Vernon fire zone.

"But this happens every spring," Sawchuk said.

The fire is currently under control with a guard around 90 per cent and a hose around 60 per cent. In addition to Ellison and Lake Country fire departments, Forestry responded with nine trucks.

The property owner declined to comment about the fire.
