WHL Roundup: Tyson Baillie scores two as Rockets hold on to beat Blazers

KELOWNA - Tyson Baillie gave last season's Western Hockey League champions the perfect start to the year.

Baillie scored twice and added an assist as the Kelowna Rockets held on to beat the Kamloops Blazers 4-3 on Friday night.

Tomas Soustal and Justin Kirkland also chipped in for Kelowna (1-0-0), which fell to the Oshawa Generals in the championship game of the 2015 Memorial Cup. Jackson Whistle kicked out 30 shots for the win in net.

Jesse Zaharichuk, Spencer Bast and Garrett Pilon had goals for the Blazers (0-1-0), who got 26 saves from Connor Ingram.

The Rockets failed to score on three power-play chances while Kamloops was 0 for 6.

BRANDON, Man. — Connor Chaulk scored the only goal of the shootout as Swift Current slipped past the Wheat Kigns.

Tyler Adams had a power-play goal at 19:50 of the first period for the Broncos (1-0-0).

Tim McGauley opened the scoring in the first for Brandon (0-0-1).

HITMEN 4 ICE 2

CRANBROOK, B.C. — Travis Sanheim scored the first of three-straight power-play goals for Calgary as it doubled the Ice.

Taylor Sanheim and Radel Fazleev also had goals on the man advantage for the Hitmen (1-0-0). Carsen Twarynski had the other Calgary goal.

Jon Martin, shorthanded, and Nathyn Mortlock chipped in for Kootenay (0-1-0).

HURRICANES 5 TIGERS 1

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Tyler Wong struck twice, including once on the power play, to lead the Hurricanes over Medicine Hat.

Jaeger White, Arvin Atwal and Justin Gutierrez also scored for Lethbridge (1-0-0).

Trevor Cox responded on the power play in the third period for the Tigers (0-1-0).

BLADES 7 RAIDERS 2

SASKATOON — Connor Gay had two goals and two assists as the Blades routed Prince Albert.

Cameron Hebig added a goal and three assists for Saskatoon (1-0-0). Brycen Martin, Chasetan Braid, Ryan Graham and Nick Zajac supplied the rest of the offence.

Reid Gardiner and Jordan Tkatch scored in the first period for the Raiders (0-1-0).

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Carter Hart stopped all 27 shots he faced as Everett shut out the Cougars.

Patrick Bajkov opened the scoring in the second period for the Silvertips (1-0-0) before Connor Dewar provided insurance late in the third.

Ty Edmonds turned aside 33 shots for Prince George (0-1-0).

VICTORIA — Dante Hannoun and Vladimir Bobylev had a goal and assist each as the Royals got past Portland.

Jack Walker and Ryan Peckford also scored for Victoria (1-0-0).

Carl Ericson answered in the third period for the Winterhawks (0-1-0).

GIANTS 3 THUNDERBIRDS 2

VANCOUVER — Ty Ronning struck twice as the Giants hung on to beat Seattle.

Radovan Bondra had the other on the power play for Vancouver (1-0-0).

Scott Eansor and Nick Holowko scored in the third period for the Thunderbirds (0-1-0).
