Westsyde Pool petition delivered to Kamloops mayor

KAMLOOPS - A petition with over 1,500 signatures has been delivered to Mayor Peter Milobar asking the city to consider upgrading the Westsyde Pool and Community Centre.

Amanda Cosburn started the petition last year when it was announced the pool was going to be shut down for roof repairs. At the time a variety of options were on the table about what was to be done with the pool during the repairs.

Coburn and the petitioners are looking for the pool to be upgraded to a recreation centre.

“I want them to to understand we don’t just want the upgraded rec centre, we want the pool to stay as well,” Cosburn says. “We’d hate to see the space be turned into basketball courts and no pool.”

Cosburn met with Mayor Milobar this week to discuss the petition and the next steps.

“He was very understanding. The city recognizes there is absolutely a need,” she says.

A report from city staff will be released today, Jan. 29, and the councillors will be dealing with it, along with the petition, at their meeting on Tuesday.

Cosburn says Milobar told her there will likely be a public consultation period.

“I’ll base my next course of action based on what they decide Tuesday," Cosburn says.

She isn’t sure if the city will use the physical version of the petition she dropped off, or view the still active petition on at change.org, so she’s encouraging people to still go online and sign.
