West Kelowna firefighters meet challenge of three fires in one day

WEST KELOWNA - Well that was quite a day.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue extinguished three fires in three separate neighbourhoods yesterday, June 19, before any of them grew large enough to become truly threatening. A fire in Rose Valley last night was the most difficult, requiring firefighters to hike 800m uphill to reach the fire and assistance from B.C. Wildfire Service airtankers.

Chief Jason Brolund said that fire reached 100 feet by 200 feet in size.

It followed a fire in Glenrosa mid-morning and another fire near McDonald's in Westbank in the afternoon. Brolund said with challenging conditions, the community is going to have to work together to stay safe.

"An extreme fire danger rating, weather conditions, including wind have combined to challenge our fire department. In all cases firefighters have responded quickly and effectively to keep the fires small and protect life and property," he said. "Thank you to the public for their vigilance and reports to 9-1-1 which have also been of assistance."

No structures were damaged and no injuries were caused by the fires. One was caused accidentally by hot equipment, the causes of the other two fires was undetermined though one was deemed human caused.
