Storm brings snow, wind to large sections of B.C.

Original Publication Date October 25, 2019 - 9:46 AM

VANCOUVER - A storm that swept across much of British Columbia on Friday brought heavy snow to central and northeastern parts of the province while powerful winds were forecast for much of the south coast and southern Interior.

Environment Canada issued snowfall and wind warnings for several B.C. regions.

Snow blanketed the Peace region, Bulkley Valley and higher elevations of Highway 97, with as much as 15 centimetres expected.

Wind warnings covered the southern Gulf Islands, a large part of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Canyon, with gusts of up to 90 km/h possible, while special weather statements were issued for the Fraser Valley and most of the Okanagan.

Kamloops Fire Rescue said all roads within the city limits were open after power lines were knocked down by the wind or trees falling.

Acting platoon captain Dale Geffard said the department had trucks in every area of the city confirming whether the lines that were down were communication or power lines.

As a precaution, the city of Vancouver closed Stanley Park's Ghost Train for the day and had rangers on standby to close the park, if the winds presented a risk to visitors.

Several BC Ferries crossings were also cancelled between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay, and Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay. (The Canadian Press, CHNL)
