Maritimers digging out, schools cancelled after intense snow storm

HALIFAX - Maritimers are cleaning up after a powerful storm that brought heavy snow and howling winds to the region.

A number of schools are closed for the day, and the Halifax International Airport is reporting a number of cancellations and delays.

The storm Sunday knocked out power to thousands of customers in the region and disrupted ferry services between Nova Scotia, P.E.I and New Brunswick.

In Nova Scotia, the snow changed to a messy mixture of ice pellets and freezing rain Sunday afternoon, making driving treacherous.

Streets in Halifax are slick and ice-covered today.

Environment Canada is warning of blowing snow and reduced visibility for parts of Newfoundland as the storm passes over the island, but forecasters say conditions are expected to improve throughout the day.
