More volunteers are needed to help the Kamloops Emergency Support Services as wildfire activity continues to threaten surrounding communities.

Eighty volunteers and supporting partners have been working hard every day since June 29 to provide over 7,000 hours of support so far, according to a news release by the City of Kamloops.

Training has been scheduled to take place between Aug. 7 and 14. Volunteers will be working directly with evacuees to support their Emergency Social Services registration and provide referrals to necessary supports.

Volunteers must be comfortable working on computers and speaking directly with evacuees over the phone. They must be able to complete training and obtain a Police Information and Vulnerable Sector check.

The Kamloops Emergency Social Services team has been working to ensure that everyone who has been displaced from their homes and directed to Kamloops has access to required basic supports such as food, lodging, clothing, emotional support, and family reunification.

“Our Emergency Support Services volunteers and staff are well trained to work in our virtual reception centre. We want to reassure Kamloops residents and our regional friends that evacuees are being assisted with expertise, experience, and diligence to support the residents of Kamloops and our regional partners,” stated Dan Sutherland, the City’s Emergency Program Coordinator, in the media release.
