VIDEO: Why B.C. Wildlife Park in Kamloops wants your old cologne

KAMLOOPS - WildSafeBC conducted another bear-resistant bin testing earlier this week, a program that certifies products intended to keep wild bears from entering compost bins and garbage cans.

B.C. Wildlife Park zookeeper Danielle Rogers slathered the vulnerable areas of a compost bin about to undergo testing on Wednesday, May 16. The test was to see how long it would take for grizzly bears, Dawson and Knute, to burst open the compost bin to get the food inside.

Old cologne or flavour extracts are actually useful in conducting bear-resistance tests, and add a variety of smells to the animals’ enclosure.

Rogers says in the wild a variety of smells are happening all the time, which is difficult to replicate in captivity. Adding a new smell into the air adds variety for the bears, and inspires their curiosity.

“Anything that you would use on yourself that’s safe for people we can use for them,” Rogers says. “And it’s not just the bears some of the other animals in the park like it as well. We’ll put it in the cats’ enclosures things like that."

If you have bottles of cologne, or flavouring extracts you can bring it to the front desk of B.C. Wildlife Park or place it in the green donation bin in the parking lot.
