VERNON - A Surrey man woke up this morning in police custody after officers found him sleeping in his vehicle in Vernon with a stockpile of weapons.

Vernon RCMP say in a media release just before 10 a.m. today, Dec. 6, police were called about a suspicious man sleeping in a vehicle in the Okanagan Landing Plaza parking lot on 25 Street.

Police found the man asleep in the driver's seat. He'd allegedly been there for three hours.

Officers observed what they believed to be a long gun in the rear of the vehicle.

RCMP say they placed the 26-year-old driver from Surrey under arrest for officer safety and explored the rest of the vehicle, discovering a bevy of weapons, including knives, a .22 calibre rifle, an antique revolver, ammunition, and imitation weapons.

"The diligence exercised by the initiating officers permitted us to remove these weapons from circulation amongst the criminal element," Const. Kelly Brett said in the release.
