Vernon man exposed his genitals at bus stop; police seek witnesses

Vernon RCMP are seeking witnesses after a 31-year-old man exposed his genitals to a group of women waiting for a bus.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, at 7 p.m. Aug. 6, police were called to a report of an indecent act at a bus stop at the intersection of 30 Street and 30 Avenue.

A witness told police that a man had allegedly exposed his genitals and approached a group of young women waiting to board a bus.

Police say a 31-year-old Vernon man was arrested and is currently in custody awaiting a court appearance.

"Investigators... would like to speak to the young women who were approached by the suspect that evening," Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski said in the release. "If you are one of those individuals, or were at the location at the time and witnessed this lewd act, it's important that we hear from you and are asking that you please contact us."

Court records show that Steven Matthew Byman, born 1991, was charged with committing an indecent act in a public place and has previously been charged with exposing himself in public.

In December 2021, Crown prosecutors stayed a charge of committing an indecent act in a public place for an incident that took place in Nelson that August.

He's also been convicted of assault with a weapon, uttering threats, mischief and breaching his probation multiple times.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the RCMP at 250-545-7171.
