Vehicle ripped in two by collision in Coldstream; occupants walk away

VERNON - Two teenagers can consider themselves lucky after walking away from a high speed collision with a utility pole in Coldstream this morning.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Don Moskaluk says the two teens were on Kalamalka Road around 4:15 a.m. this morning, Aug. 17, when the vehicle they were in struck a utility pole at high speed, sheering the vehicle in two.

Emergency responders found a Nissan Maxima with its front third torn off and sitting in the travelled portion of the road, next to a sheered off utility pole, he says. The passenger compartment and the rest of the car came to a stop in a park on the north side of the road.

Moskaluk says a 17-year-old male driver and a 16-year-old male passenger were found nearby and taken to the hospital for assessment, apparently suffering only minor injuries.

Police investigation has determined speed to be a contributing factor in the single vehicle collision. Charges against the young driver are being considered.
