Valleyview fire believed to be at homeless camp

KAMLOOPS - An early morning fire on the riverbank in Valleyview is believed to have been at a homeless camp in the area.

A tree went up in flames across from Princess Auto, and Kamloops Fire Rescue crews were called to the scene around 4:45 a.m., May 27. They arrived to find the fire had started across the railway tracks, and called CP to get permission to cross them.

CP temporarily shut down the track.

Kamloops Fire Rescue Capt. Troy Grant says this isn't the first time the department has responded to a call like this.

"It is a problem we encounter with homeless shelters on the beaches," Grant says. "We often respond to fires on the beach."

Grant says no one was found at the scene after a full search of the area was conducted, but crews did find tarps and other miscellaneous items that lead them to believe this was a homeless camp.
