The Latest: Governor applauds advancing gun control measures

TRENTON, N.J. - The Latest on gun control measures in the New Jersey Legislatures (all times local):

9:15 p.m.

New Jersey's governor is applauding lawmakers for advancing gun control legislation, including a measure to bar so-called ghost guns.

Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy in a statement on Monday praised a Senate committee for advancing a package of gun control bills. Among them was a measure to prohibit the purchase of firearm parts used to make untraceable weapons, or ghost guns.

Murphy stopped short of saying he would sign the measures, but called on the Democrat-led Senate to pass them.

The Assembly already has gun control legislation, but not the ghost gun measure.

The other advancing bills include one that would require background checks for private gun sales and another that would lower the maximum magazine capacity from 15 rounds to 10.

New Jersey lawmakers are advancing a measure to prohibit the purchase of firearms parts used to make untraceable weapons, or so-called ghost guns.

The Democrat-led Senate law and public safety committee approved the measure Monday. The panel is also considering a half-dozen gun-controlled measures that have cleared the Democrat-controlled Assembly.

Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy has said he generally supports measures aimed at tightening the state's already-strict gun laws.

The ghost-gun bill calls for barring the purchase of separate parts or kits that could be used to manufacture a firearm that cannot be traced by law enforcement.

It is already unlawful to make a handgun, rifle or shotgun without a license, and manufacturing a machine-gun, sawed-off shotgun or assault firearm is also illegal.
