The Latest: Instructor started false shooting reports at USC

LOS ANGELES - The Latest on reports of a shooting at University of Southern California (all times local):

6:30 p.m.

School officials say false reports of a shooting at the University of California were spawned by a faculty member telling her students during class that there was an active shooter in the building.

USC Department of Public Safety chief John Thomas said Los Angeles police are questioning the woman. Authorities did not say why she may have made the statement.

The campus went on lockdown as the shooting reports came in at around 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Police gave the all-clear less than an hour later.

Los Angeles police say they have found no evidence of a shooting at the University of Southern California.

Officer Irma Mota says officers searched in and around a building on the campus near downtown Los Angeles and found no danger to the community.

Mota says calls reporting a shooting near the north end of campus came in around 12:20 p.m. Monday. Police gave the all-clear less than an hour later.

Students and faculty are being urged to avoid the area as police wrap up their investigation.

USC had sent out campus-wide alerts announcing police activity near Fertitta Hall and telling people nearby to shelter in place.

Los Angeles police are responding to reports of a shooting at the University of Southern California.

Officer Irma Mota says calls came in around 12:20 p.m. Monday near the north end of campus, which is near downtown Los Angeles.

She says officers found no immediate evidence of gunfire. They are searching a building. She didn't have any additional information.

USC sent out campus-wide alerts announcing police activity near Fertitta Hall. Students and faculty are being urged to avoid the area or shelter in place.

A university alert says shots were reported but not confirmed.
