Bond set for U of Chicago student who was shot by officer

Original Publication Date April 05, 2018 - 4:21 AM

CHICAGO - Bond has been set at $15,000 for a University of Chicago student who was shot after rushing at campus police officers brandishing a long metal pipe.

Twenty-one-year-old Charles Thomas is charged with aggravated assault on an officer with a weapon and property damage.

In court Thursday, attorney Steven Goldman told Cook County Judge Stephanie Miller the episode was an isolated incident related to his client's recent mental health issues. Miller said she took that into account in setting bond.

University officials say three university officers were responding to a report about a burglary in the city's Hyde Park neighbourhood Tuesday night when they encountered a student breaking car and apartment windows with a pipe.

The school released police video of the encounter, showing officers backing away from Thomas and ordering him to drop the pipe. Thomas charges at one of the officers, and the officer shoots him in the shoulder.
