Maryland county settles lawsuit with transgender teen

EASTON, Md. - A Maryland county board of education has settled a lawsuit with a transgender teen that it tried to block from using certain locker rooms.

The Daily Record of Baltimore reports 16-year-old Max Brennan filed the lawsuit when his middle school barred him from using boys' facilities. A release by a member of the lawsuit says Talbot County defendants will pay $20 in damages. Brennan also will have permanent access to boys' facilities.

U.S. District Judge George L. Russell III ruled in the case in March that transgender students cannot be barred from using facilities corresponding with their gender identity. The newspaper says Russell is the first judge in Maryland to issue such a ruling. Maryland's American Civil Liberties Union and FreeState Justice Inc., a social justice organization, brought the lawsuit.
