Police: Shooting leaves teen dead, 12-year-old boy wounded

Original Publication Date November 05, 2017 - 9:21 AM

PHILADELPHIA - A man opened fire on a group of teenagers sitting on a stoop of a northern Philadelphia home, killing a 16-year-old and wounding a 12-year-old, less than 24 hours after mourners gathered for the funeral of another 16-year-old shooting victim, police said.

The suspect, described as in his early 20s, approached the group and opened fire shortly after midnight Saturday, then fled, they added.

Responding officers found the 16-year-old youth face down on the street with gunshot wounds to the head and body, police said. He was pronounced dead.

A 12-year-old approached them and showed them a gunshot wound to his right thigh. He was last listed in stable condition.

Police have no motive for the shooting and no arrests were immediately made; homicide detectives are investigating.

On Oct. 24, gunfire in southern Philadelphia attributed by police to a feud between two groups of teenagers killed two 16-year-olds, Caleer Miller and Salvatore DiNubile. Another 16-year-old youth is facing charges in that case. Police are also investigating shots fired at the home of the suspect a few days after the slayings.

On Saturday morning, hours before the latest shooting, hundreds attended a service at Love Kingdom Fellowship Church celebrating the life of Miller, remembering his smile and his love of friends, family and the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team.

"He was an amazing person. There was nobody like him who could make your day. When he wasn't at school, the day was boring," 17-year-old Paris Johnson told The Philadelphia Inquirer after the service.
