WINGATE, N.C. - Police say two men were shot and killed and a third man wounded in a shooting that led to a lockdown at a North Carolina university.

Wingate Police Chief Donnie Gay said no students or employees of Wingate University were involved in Wednesday's shooting, which happened on a street near one of the entrances to the campus.

Wingate University is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Charlotte.

Gay said the men's identities are being withheld until their families are notified. He said a search is underway for a suspect.

Campus officials issued the lockdown order about 6:15 p.m., and lifted it at 8:30 p.m.
