School bus strike affects some NYC area school districts

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. - The week has gotten off to a hectic start for parents in several New York City area school districts who were left scrambling because of a school bus strike.

The strike Monday affected thousands of students in the Freeport, Baldwin, Hicksville and Rockville Centre districts on Long Island.

New York City's Office of Pupil Transportation made contingency plans for several hundred students in Queens.

Newsday says the Hicksville School District started operating at 6:30 a.m. Monday to extend its drop-off times.

On Long Island, Baumann & Sons Buses Inc. has been in talks with TWU Local 252. The union represents about 300 drivers, monitors and mechanics. TWU Local 252 President Debra Hagan says the union recognizes that the strike "is a burden" for the parents and the schools.
