Police: Man shot by officer in DC faces charges

WASHINGTON - Police in Washington are identifying a man they say was shot by an officer after he brandished a gun during a pursuit.

Police spokeswoman Karimah Bilal identified the man in an email Monday as 23-year-old Mark Donte James George of Washington. Bilal says George is being charged with assault on a police officer and carrying a pistol without a license.

A police report states that when officers investigating a report of gunshots near a school late Friday tried to make contact with a group nearby, George fled. As officers chased him, he brandished a handgun and an officer shot him. Police said Saturday that George was critically injured, but his injuries weren't thought to be life-threatening.

The officer is on administrative leave and Bilal says his name won't be released.
